Safer communities are built by communities
NESN — North East Safeguarding Network is a community-led safeguarding network focused on strengthening safety, belonging and early intervention for children, young people and vulnerable adults across the North East.
Who We Are
Developed from a simple belief
Safeguarding is not something that should only be discussed when a crisis has already happened. Communities need the knowledge, confidence, connections and support to recognise concerns early and know what to do next.
NESN aims to help create those connections.
Why NESN Exists
Too often, concerns are recognised only after situations have escalated
People may notice changes in behaviour, vulnerability, exploitation, unsafe environments or other warning signs but may not know:
- Whether something is a safeguarding concern.
- Who they should speak to.
- What they can appropriately do themselves.
- When a concern should be escalated.
- Where someone can access specialist support.
NESN seeks to bridge that gap through education, community engagement, early intervention, appropriate signposting and partnership working.
We want communities to feel better equipped to recognise risk without expecting volunteers or members of the public to investigate, diagnose or take on responsibilities that belong to trained professionals and statutory services.

What Makes NESN Different?
Designed around the space between community awareness and formal intervention
We are not a replacement for the police, children's social care, adult social care, healthcare professionals, specialist charities or other statutory and professional services.
Instead, our role is to help communities understand safeguarding, recognise potential concerns, build safer networks and connect people with the appropriate support.
Community-Led, Professionally Minded
Community-led does not mean operating without boundaries
We are committed to developing appropriate governance, training, safeguarding procedures, data protection practices, volunteer vetting and partnership arrangements as the organisation grows.
Our ambition is to combine the strengths of community knowledge and presence with the expertise of appropriate professional and statutory partners.

Looking Ahead
Not simply another organisation
Our ambition is to build a connected safeguarding network that strengthens what already exists. We want to work alongside communities, voluntary organisations, professionals and relevant services to reduce isolation, improve awareness and help people access the right support at the right time.
Safer communities are not created by one organisation. They are built when people work together. That is the purpose of NESN.
