What We Do
Prevention, awareness, connection and appropriate escalation
NESN works to strengthen community safeguarding through five core areas of activity.
01 · Core area
Community Forums
Creating opportunities for communities to come together, raise concerns, share experiences and improve local understanding of safeguarding.
Forums provide a space where people can talk openly about what is happening locally and learn how safeguarding works in practice.
- Open community conversations about local safety.
- Improved understanding of safeguarding responsibilities.
- Space for concerns to be raised and heard.
- Shared learning between residents, volunteers and organisations.
02 · Core area
Drop-In Hub
Providing accessible opportunities for people to seek information, guidance and connection with appropriate support.
Many people do not know where to start when they are worried about themselves or someone else. A drop-in offers a low-barrier first step.
- Friendly, non-judgemental first point of contact.
- Information about local and national services.
- Help understanding what happens when a concern is reported.
- Signposting to appropriate professional and specialist support.
03 · Core area
Street & Community Presence
Building a visible, responsible community presence focused on prevention, reassurance, identifying concerns and connecting people with the appropriate support.
- Visible, approachable presence in local areas.
- Reassurance and early identification of concerns.
- Welfare-focused engagement with vulnerable people.
- Appropriate escalation to statutory and emergency services.
04 · Core area
Training & Capacity Building
Helping communities and volunteers develop greater awareness of safeguarding, exploitation, vulnerability, risk and appropriate responses.
- Safeguarding awareness for community members.
- Recognising exploitation, abuse and neglect.
- Understanding reporting routes and thresholds.
- Building confidence to respond appropriately.
05 · Core area
Partnership & Escalation Routes
Building constructive relationships with relevant organisations and services so that concerns can be appropriately shared, escalated and responded to.
- Clear pathways between community and professional services.
- Joint working with voluntary and statutory partners.
- Reduced duplication between organisations.
- Faster connection to the right support.
Our Boundaries
We are clear about what we are not
NESN does not replace statutory safeguarding agencies, emergency services or specialist support organisations.
- We do not investigate allegations.
- We do not carry out statutory assessments.
- We do not confront suspected perpetrators.
- We do not provide clinical, legal or therapeutic services.
- We do not take on responsibilities that belong to trained professionals.
Where a concern requires professional intervention or immediate action, people should be directed to the appropriate statutory or specialist service.
